If you visit EAotT fairly regularly, you should be aware of our tremendous love for the late hip hop producer J Dilla, who was a brilliant, talented, and influential presence in the world of hip hop production. In the years since his death, J Dilla’s legacy has definitely grown (my own knowledge and subsequent love of him having come about since his death), but royalties are not particularly lucrative in the world of underground hip hop production, and his mother, Ma Dukes, is still saddled with the huge medical costs of his death. Despite many well-intentoned tributes, including work from the likes of Common, Erykah Badu, The Roots, and Busta Rhymes, it seems that there has been very little actual financial help provided to Ma Dukes. This latest tribute, from Sollilaquists of Sound featuring J-Live and Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, is a song called “Death of the Muse” and is available at Insound.com for a $2 donation, all of which goes to support Ma Dukes’ expenses.

I know this is the internet and you expect to get everything for free these days, but I can honestly say this is a solid track (the download includes the instrumental) and a good cause that both deserve your money. For obvious reasons, I’m only going to point you to the place to buy it.

All of this, as well as the full press release via Passion of the Weiss, whose author also has two great articles on the subject of Dilla’s legacy and his mother.
