When I saw them open for New Pornos this spring, I hadn’t ever listened to them before, I had only heard good things. But they blew me away.

I love Will Sheff‘s songwriting. He’s very narrative, in that his songs have a strong sense of structure and they’re always going somewhere. He manages to make five-minute songs sound very concise as a result.

It doesn’t hurt that he also has a strong sense of melody. Basically, what I’m saying is that his music is even better than he is pretentious.

“Lost Coastlines,” a track off of their upcoming album The Stand Ins, is no exception. It’s very good, kind of pretentious, and a little self-indulgently sad. But hold your nose a little bit and download it, it’s worth it.

The Stand Ins will come out on September 9th. It’s billed as the second half of last year’s album The Stage Names.
